A Meat-Eater Goes Meat-Free for One Week
Hi, I’m Lorna. I really like to eat meat. But here I am steaming mushrooms.
I’m going Meat-free for one week. Join me?
Over the next week on this blog, I’ll be trying new vegetarian recipes. It’s good for the environment. It’s good for your health. If I can do it, anybody can. (I’m glad these blueberry streusel muffins are meat-free! ha!)
Tune in this week. I’ll be baking…
eating more veggies…
taking you to my neighborhood farmer’s market…
and providing you with one simple and tasty meat-free recipe each day.
(I am currently marinading tempeh and pickling daikon and carrots for an Asian-inspired sandwich. Recipe soon!)
About a week ago, I came up with the idea of going Meat-Free for an entire week. I already participate in Meatless Mondays, but am interested in broadening my repertoire of vegetarian recipes. I’ll be back later today with a recipe for an Asian-inspired tempeh sandwich, and links to all the other food bloggers who have also committed to this one-week challenge.
Want to join in? It’s not to late. Simply leave a comment with a link to your blog, and I’ll add you to the blog roll.
I am really looking forward to opening up the comments section everyday this week to discuss what we’ve cooked, and how we are finding the experience. (I am sure I will have a tougher time with this than some of you who already consume small amounts of meat.)
Food writer/author Kim O’Donnel was kind enough to do an interview with me regarding my motivations behind going Meat-Free for one week. You can check out the interview here.

I’m in, half way through Day 1. So far, so good. Looking forward to your recipes. I made a quinoa dish to take to a gluten free dinner tonight, will be posting about my meatless week. http://www.celiaccity.com
Happy to be joining in!

Considering that I am going to a vegetarian retreat center this weekend, I think this shouldn’t be too difficult. I guess I can count today too, since I had vegan sausage for breakfast instead of pork (just because they are tasty!). If your salads need jazzing up, I’ll give you some of my spicy salad greens from my garden!

Hi Lorna! I’d like to join you. At first I thought I couldn’t really, since I already keep a vegetarian kitchen. But I’m really dependent on dairy products, and they’re pretty bad from a carbon-emissions viewpoint too. So I’ll go vegan! I’ll post at least two vegan recipes on my blog by the time the week is out. Thanks for organizing this–I’m looking forward to the discussion!

Nope, an all pork day for me today – but no doubt, not a dent in what you did yesterday!
I see you plan to bake a pie – no leaf lard this round?

What great news! I read the interview and had a suggestion for your BBQ.. Jackfruit might be a good idea. I haven’t ever made it on my own, but I am pretty sure you can marinade it to taste just like pork (as I’ve had at some restaurants).

Cool idea. (I too am a dedicated meat eater but love to discover vegetarian alternatives.) Is cheese allowed? If so, haloumi is wonderful grilled on the barbecue. Afterwards, drizzle it with a little olive oil and chopped mint or marjoram. It’s fabulous.
